James Degale

James Degale

Year of birth:

2008 Bejing Olympic Middleweight Gold
2006 Commonwealth Bronze
3 x ABA Elilte Title

You'd be forgiven for thinking that James Degales has always been a controversial character with an ego that matches his outstanding boxing abilities. But you'd be wrong. Prior to his controversial ABA North West Division loss to club mate and Middleweight rival George Groves, James Degale was a much loved switch hitting favourite in both the North West and the rest of London.

Affectionally named Chunky, due to his chubbiness when first stepping into Trojan gym many years ago, it very quickly became apparent that Degale was a massive talent. Upon winning practically every domestic competition, including 3 Senior ABA titles, Degale became part of a brilliant GB team.

James represented Great Britain at the 2008 Summer Olympics in the Middleweight boxing event, winning the gold medal beating 3 boxers who he had lost to before the Olympics. In the quarter finals he beat a former Olympic gold medalist from Athens (Bakhtiyar Artayev) and in the semi-final once again beat the late Irishman Darren Sutherland. In the final James DeGale won a bad tempered affair against the Cuban Emilio Correa who was deducted two points in the first round for biting DeGale's shoulder.
